In case you missed it, we compiled news that occured recently. July has been marked by records and growth of activity in some ports.
HALF-YEAR STATEMENTS
Many ports revealed their half-year statements :
- Port of Antwerp thus set new record by handling 118 648 143 tonnes of freight which represents an increase of 6,5 % compared to last year.
- Port of Long Beach has known the busiest month ever by handling 752 188 TEUs last June. This is the highest volume of TEUs handled by the Port of Long Beach in 107-Year-History.
- Port of Corpus Christi moved 52,2 million tons of freight between January 1st and June 30, 2018.
- Port of Oakland set a monthly record by handling 87 207 TEUs last June, which represents an increase of 8,7 % compared to 2017.
- Port of Los Angeles has processed more than 9,1 million TEUs for its second consecutive year.
ECOLOGY
Ecology is a major challenge in the maritime industry. Port of Long Beach will thus invest $5,3M in green-energy equipment for two of its terminals.
Swiss freight trader Cargill has launched the CO2 Challenge. It aims to find new technologies able to reduce ships’ CO2 emissions, at least by ten percent.
On the other hand, shipping is becoming greener : Hapag-Lloyd revealed a new ship able to run on liquefied natural gas. The ship has a capacity of 15 000 TEUs.
Jan De Nul has launched an ultra-low emission vessel. Five other vessels were ordered. These vessems work with an exhaust gas treatment system and are diesel-electrical powered.
